An excellent follow-up to McCurdy's first book, The Serpent's Egg. In this book, we have the continuing adventures of Miranda, a ten year old girl from Ottawa, and her group of friends. In the previous book, they helped to save a magical land from peril, and they have to do the same here, except that events are much more perilous. The book is crammed with adventure from beginning to end, with more scary events in Ottawa than the first book, and seemingly a lot more in the magical land as well. The former portal beneath the Library of Parliament has been closed, so the kids have to travel to the Gatineau Hills, to William Lyon McKenzie King's estate of Kingsmere, where they use some of King's ruins as a portal. The kids get separated while on their adventures, but everyone is reunited and things turn out well, thanks to Miranda's proper use of the crown of the title. This is another handsome edition, a fun fantasy book for kids.
