The full subtitle of this book is: Tokyo from Edo to the Earthquake; How the Shogun's Ancient Capital Became a Great Modern City, 1867-1923. Seidensticker provides less of a timeline/great men type history book and more of an overview of social and cultural changes. Unfortunately, he's notably bad at giving big picture information, and the book itself is poorly structured and organized. I found it hard to orient myself in his narrative, and the book was awash in detail that had no context. There are only two maps, Tokyo in the years 1892 and 1914, but the book has quite a few photographs, drawings, woodcuts, and so forth, and it even has two full-colour sections.
