Subtitled: The Extraordinary Communities that Arise in Disaster. This excellent book builds a theory that people help each other in disastrous times, focusing on five disasters: the earthquake in San Francisco in 1906, the deadly harbour explosion in Halifax in 1917, the earthquake that hit Mexico City in the 80s, then two more recent American disasters, 9/11 in NYC and Katrina hitting New Orleans. This is a well-written book, and Solnit has a knack for putting together details into a larger story.
