The Serpent's Egg is a fantasy for younger readers. It begins in Ottawa, and a group of ten year old friends end up in a magical realm by means of a portal under the Library of Parliament. The book is a handsome edition, with a map of Ottawa and the magical realm in the endpapers, and a very funny flip-the-pages animation of a poodle. The exact route through Ottawa is shown on the map: from New Edinburgh, St. Patrick St., Old St. Patrick St., Murray St., through Major's Hill Park, across the Rideau Canal locks, up the stairs to Wellington St., then through the Centre Block to the Library of Parliament. The journey is very suspenseful! McCurdy's book might seem at first to be a Harry Potter wannabe, but it owes more to Tolkien and John Christopher.

Additional Comments

Nov-03 - Fiona Scannell gave the book 7/10 and wrote:

This book offers an interesting view of Parliament Hill (and the Parliamentary Library!). I enjoyed the characters' trek from New Edinbourgh to the Hill, and would have liked for more of the story's action to have taken place in modern day Ottawa. This novel has a strong heroine, and her cast of supporting friends make their scary journey very entertaining!
