The Amadeus Net is an interesting mix of tones; some of the book is in a jokey mode that sometimes happens in science fiction, and some of the book has a quite serious intent to it. The title refers to the fact that the main character is Mozart, alive and well in 2038 after nearly 300 years of life. Most of the time Mozart has spent in hiding, but now it looks like his years of anonymity might be over.
The book has a larger cast of characters than I was expecting. Mozart lives on a city state in the middle of the Pacific Ocean called Ipolis, and in addition to the sentient city itself, there is a news reporter, an aspiring young painter, a Czech lesbian, a Canadian diplomat, and an all-around psychopath. Each character is given an extensive background, which makes the beginning of the story a bit slow.
The sections of character background cover quite a few countries of the world, and most characters note where they were in 2010 when an asteroid hit Antarctica and caused quite a catastrophe. Since Ipolis is close to New Zealand, we get a bit of detail about that country; there is not much information about Mozart's early years, but the reporter does visit Prague at one point.
