The Fire Demons is the first book of a new trilogy by McCurdy, a Canadian author known for her Serpent's Egg trilogy. This book starts off with a boy named Steele who lives in Toronto. He's just a kid trying to enjoy school and spend some time with his friends Mac and Riley. Unfortunately, the worst bully in school, Dirk, has been extorting money from him for two years, and now Dirk has found out about Steele's guitar lessons - another opportunity for extortion. Steele's dad is a police officer, but his dad's advice to stand up the bully hasn't helped Steele so far, at all. And his friends are just as intimidated as he is.
McCurdy doesn't pull any punches in her depiction of bullying. But the first few chapters of the book are a bit misleading; the story takes a turn for the fantastic when Dirk goes missing and Steele and his friends find out that lots of kids across North American have gone missing as well. It seems that there is some kind of war going on that has to do with magical creatures that live underground; Steele and friends get mixed up in this conflict.
The kids end up in New York City about halfway through the book (I don't want to reveal how). Both Toronto and New York City are used in detail as settings, several Toronto neighbourhoods around Steele's house and many famous landmarks in NYC.
