I've seldom read a book that uses New York City so vividly as a setting! The Green and the Gray tells the story of a struggle between two groups of aliens (the two groups of the title) secretly living in NYC; as their presence becomes not so secret, and the struggle between them intensifies, there are plenty of chases, hideouts, strategies, and so forth, all involving the city in some way. There's a side trip to upstate New York where some alien warriors are hiding, but most of the book takes place in the city, across the different boroughs, along the waterfronts, and through the many parks of the city. The book is quite the masterpiece of local colour.
It's also pretty good science fiction (although the explanation for the aliens about 2/3rds of the way through does sound like the kind of premise that writer's guidelines warn against using), using a contemporary setting and some of Zahn's ideas about tolerance and understanding to strong effect. This book may not be the space opera that Zahn fans expect, but it's well worth reading.
